76.11The Lequin family have a remarkable relationship with the village of Santenay which is located at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune . The family have farmed the land in the village since 1604.Today Louis Lequin works the same soils as his ancestors such as the family’s vines in the “ Clos Genet “ plot which was purchased in 1669. The family also have an enviable holding of several other prized plots within the village of Santenay & also treasured vines in the iconic Grand Cru of Bâtard- Montrachet & Chassagne-Montrachet. The farming of the vines are done with sustainable practices and traditional ploughing & hoeing each year sees the soil aerated and the vines principle roots encouraged to delve deeper into the soil to access valuable nutrients. In the winery the philosophy is to let each cuvee speak of its place and therefore oak is used with a light hand for both white and red wines with the premium barrels of Francois Freres used exclusively.
With Burgundy becoming more expensive every year the astute buyer is discovering villages that can provide great drinking at a more accessible price and Santenay along with Ladoix and Savigny Les Beaune are great starting points.
