In 2003 husband and wife team, Ian & Diane Holding, decided to turn their lives upside gown and start the journey to build what is now Fancrest Estate. Their labour of love now ranks as one of a handful of elite hillside vineyards on limestone in the Omihi Hills of the Waipara Valley in North Canterbury. Fancrest Estate is a Pinot Noir specialist. Diane Holding runs their 5.5Ha vineyard and pop-up winery almost single-handedly. Her Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine) from Charles Sturt University in NSW comes in handy every now and again, but what she loves most is creating her wines in the vineyard and then bringing them to life in the bottle using very traditional artisinal winemaking techniques... bottling their terroir is her mission. Diane learned her craft with industry greats like Daniel Schuster and CP Lin and has gone on a produce Pinots with real individuality and class. Fancrest Estate is a no-till, certified organic vineyard and winery. Fancrest Estate is remarkably consistent in producing seductive, earthy, savoury, spicy, and occasionally floral, Pinot Noirs, with a seam of minerality running through them. All these wines rest on impressive structure that will see them through the years. Tannins can be chewey in their youth but inevitably they soften to reveal a more feminine elegant side. Bottled unfined and unfiltered vintages are cellared until deemed ready for drinking.
