Marschall Groom Cellars is a very small family winery situated in the famous Barossa Valley region of South Australia. The winery produces three varietals, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz & Zinfandel - under the label GROOM. The dream started to become reality with the purchase of 87 acres of bare land in the Kalimna appellation of the Barossa Valley, directly adjacent to the renowned Penfolds Kalimna vineyard - the home of Grange. In 1997 the first acres on their Kalimna Bush Block were planted to Shiraz, producing its first crop in the 1999 vintage. To compliment their young Shiraz fruit they source from two very old, very reputable vineyards in the Barossa, the Lehmann Vineyard with 100 year-old vines, and the Fechner Vineyard with 50 year-old vines. After thoroughly researching the climatic conditions within South Australia, a 20 acre vineyard in the Adelaide Hills appellation of Lenswood was planted to provide the perfect grapes for our Sauvignon Blanc. In 2000, 8 acres of experimental Zinfandel vines were planted on the Kalimna Bush Block. A very limited introductory wine release from these grapes was made from the 2003 vintage, available only within the Australian market.

    Groom Estate Shiraz 2002 750mL

Deep, black and inky in color with vibrant and youthful purple hues. The nose has an intense fruit lift of cherries, anise, white pepper and chocolate, which integrate well with the light toasty vanillan notes. The palate is silky, rich and seductive. The 2002 climatic conditions of the Barossa Valley produced fantastic wines.

It is big, black and an intensely colored wine. The nose shows very generous black fruit characteristics of cherries, plums and cassis. A touch of anise and spice emerge, identifying shiraz as the true personality. The up front color and aroma intensity deceive one to think of big aggressive tannins and an unruly end, but you will be surprised to find the palate rich, round and voluptuous with a soft lingering finish.
